Challenging unexpected social care charges

We resolved a case involving a client who received an invoice for over £7,000 in unpaid social care charges — 18 months after she first started receiving support.

A woman being supported and smiling.

She had been led to believe she wouldn’t have to pay towards her care, so the unexpected bill came as a huge shock.

The impact of unexpected care costs

She felt she had no choice but to cancel her ongoing care, despite still needing vital support.

This had a significant impact on both her and her family, as her daughter was forced to give up her full-time job to care for her mother.

Challenging the charges

We liaised with the client and the local authority, highlighting breaches of the Care Act 2014, including the failure to carry out an appropriate financial assessment when it should have taken place.

Following our intervention, the local authority agreed to waive £4,500 in charges.

The client has now reinstated her care, helping restore the support she needs.

A successful outcome that has eased the financial burden on our client and helped her regain access to care.
