A Day in the Life of a Paralegal at Access Social Care

Hello! I’m Marlene and I’m a Paralegal at Access Social Care.

What gets you started in the morning, Tea or Coffee?

What gets me started in the morning is always a nice green tea. Coffee is just too bitter for me!

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am a paralegal in the legal team at Access Social Care. I have been here for just under two months.

How Did You Become a Paralegal?

Growing up I had a phase of wanting to become a paramedic or doctor (probably from watching too much Casualty and Holby City! I was a dedicated fan). I knew I wanted to become someone who dedicates their life to helping others especially those who are vulnerable, marginalised, and/or faced with injustice.

So, I decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in Law. During this time, I volunteered at the Access Social Care legal clinic at my university. Helping a client get the support they needed after years of struggling – and seeing their happiness – made me determined to work in community care law. Fast forward, a paralegal role was advertised, and I found it to be the perfect opportunity for me.

While I did not end up as a doctor or paramedic, I am very grateful to work within a field that allows me to help others, especially in an organisation like ASC, where everyone has a genuine passion for advocating for those facing barriers within the system.

What does your typical day look like?

No day is the same. I typically work on a range of tasks including:

  • Drafting letters

  • Arranging meetings and taking notes

  • Managing correspondence

  • Conducting legal research

  • Handling casework admin

  • Supporting wider projects

What’s the best part about your role?

The best part of my role is knowing that every task, no matter how small or large, contributes to making a positive difference in someone’s life or eases the difficulties they face in their everyday life.

How do you wrap up your day?

At the end of the day I check my diary and review my to do list, making sure tasks have been completed and that any upcoming actions are noted. This helps me finish the day feeling organised and ensures I know exactly what I need to focus on the next morning.

Sum up life at Access Social Care three words

  • Accommodating

  • Welcoming

  • Friendly
