A Day in the Life of a People Advisor at Access Social Care

What get’s you started in the morning - Tea or Coffee?
Neither (I don't drink hot drinks) but my dog waking me up bright and early for his breakfast in the morning ensures that I'm wide awake by the time I start work!

Tell us a little bit about yourself
Hi, I'm Chelsey and I'm a People Advisor at Access Social Care. I joined in July 2024.

 

How Did You Become a People Advisor
My interest in HR began while I was working in an admin role in the corporate sector. I became really interested in how communication, culture and people practises shaped the employee experience and I realised I wanted to be part of a function which supports that. After completing my level 5 CIPD, I moved into a HR administration role and then into a HR Officer role for a de-mining charity. Working in a mission driven organisation made me realise that it is the sector I wanted to build my career in. After 5 years in that role, I was ready for my next step, which led me to the People Advisor role at Access Social Care.

 

Why Access Social Care appealed to you
My mother was severely disabled and for many years my brother and I were her only carers (while balancing university, work and other responsibilities). It wasn’t until a few years before she passed away that she finally received the care support that she needed. That change transformed our lives, giving us the space to spend meaningful, quality time together in her final years.

Having personally experienced the difference that good care can have for individuals and their families, I felt strongly about being part of a mission that promotes social care justice and ensures people can access the support they have a right to. 

 

What does your typical day look like?
As a People Advisor, I don't really have a 'typical' day, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role. My time is usually split between advising and supporting managers and employees; managing employee lifecycle activities such as onboarding, probation, performance and recruitment; contributing to HR policy development and improvement and any HR projects in the pipeline. I also handle a range of employee relations queries and day to day issues that come up unexpectedly and need immediate attention. The variety and pace of the role keep me engaged, focused and motivated.

 

What’s the best part about your role?
The best part of my role is getting to work with people across the whole organisation. I enjoy being involved in different teams challenges and priorities. Whether that's helping a manager navigate a tricky situation, support someone through a key stage of their employment or improving a process which makes things easier for people. Being able to make a practical difference to people's day to day experience is what I find most rewarding.

 

How do you wrap up your day?
At the end of my day I jot down any urgent or unfinished tasks on my mini whiteboard so that I can pick them up first thing in the morning. I also check my diary to see what meetings or priorities I have coming up which helps me switch off knowing I'm prepared for the next day.
